The Art of Storyboarding with PIXTON

PIXTON // INTRO LESSON PLAN - roughly 45 minutes

Need: 3-5 comic books, handouts, clip from film, still frames in panels (x3) examples, 2 student work examples, PREZI (instructions in prezi/slide with tools instructions), GLOBAL KIDS example ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ASK - 3 mins. Ask students about the types of comics they’ve seen and read (superhero/manga/newspaper). Discuss types of panel structure, characters, and the ways in which plot/narrative is achieved. Hand out different comics and pass around. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CLIP - 3 mins. Explain idea of storyboard. Show a 30 second clip from Wonder Woman. Ask students how they would represent this clip in individual still images/comic panels. Show my 3 examples (videos from MONSTERS/LOTR). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EXAMPLES - 4 mins. Pass out HANDOUTS. Show examples of GLOBAL KIDS student work. GLOBAL KIDS talk through their process. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SHOW - 4 mins Show Pixton interface. Quickly demo how character is uploaded, manipulated, and animated. Change arm position. Change hairstyle. Change size/height. Change shirt color. Add props. Change background. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HELP - 5 mins. Students log in to their stations. Instruct them to upload the WW character (Repeat demo on projector while they upload/manipulate) and walk through previous changes together. Tell them hands up when each change has been made. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WORK - 15 mins. Each group starts with the same PANEL 1 (WW in airplane). Students are instructed to choose another character to SAVE from preset characters (Rescue Mission). Students have to make WW save that character in 6 PANELS (PANEL 1+ 1 per student). Instruct students to add props, speech bubbles, background elements, and other characters in order to create a story out of the 6 panels. Each student builds one panel. GLOBAL KIDS Facilitators (1-2/group) help students use the respective tools and make recommendations (change expression, position, add prop, speech bubble). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SHARE - 10 mins. Share panels/story with group and tell what decisions they made along the way. How did these changes redirect the story? What are other types of stories that could be told this way? How is this pre-visualization process helpful when making a film? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SCREENGRAB EACH PANEL AND SAVE/EMAIL TO THEM LATER
