Six Dollar Fifty Man

EIGHT-YEAR OLD ANDY THINKS HE HAS SUPERHUMAN ABILITIES IN THIS CANNES-HONORED FILM FROM NEW ZEALAND.

Remember that “crazy” kid in class who lived in his own world that you definitely didn’t mess with? That’s Andy. Six Dollar Fifty Man is set in a 1970s suppressive elementary school in rural New Zealand where awkward 8-year old Andy has to overcome the everyday struggles of bullying, abuse, and love. Enough for any ordinary child, but in Andy’s world, he has super human abilities—abilities to withstand pain, scale buildings, and leap from rooftops—or so he’s convinced himself. But when Andy has a run-in with the class bullies, his fantasy and reality collide.

Andy (played by Oscar Vandy-Connor) is one of the more inspiring character I’ve seen in a long time. In a world of harsh realities, he maintains a delusional optimism in the ability of the ordinary to do the extraordinary. For those moments when the world misunderstands you—stay true to your delusions. Sometimes it’s the world that needs to change.

Directors, Mark Albiston and Louis Sutherland, do a fantastic job melding gritty realism with Hollywood super heroism. The great cinematography and shot framing place you into the world view of an 8-year old where small things have big consequences. Mark and Louis are premiering their first feature film, Shopping, at Sundance starting Feb 18th.

  1. I think this film was... o.k. However this movie needs a bit of improvement. I like the story, and the characters, but the the part where the boy throws his bookbag was really confusing. I would give this film a 3.5 out of 5.

    1. I believe that your comment was a bit.. vague. What do you feel that this film needs improvement in? It's important for the viewers to tell the artist what to improve in,
in order to do better in the future. The part where he throws his backpack may refer
that he's trying to run away from the question. But who knows! That's up to you to decide.

  4. When I first saw this short film I really didn't pay attention and I didn't care. But when I actually enjoyed this movie a lot. The message of this Film is not to bully, in this Film they focused on not to bully even if someone is different. I gave this Film a 5/5 "I loved it". I think my favorite part of the Film is when Andy the little boy in the Film hit one of his bullies in the face. When I saw that part of this Film I said "Oh he hit him with a bag of bricks, K.O". I would recommend this Film to anyone who likes very Dramatic Films. This film is just so unique compared to all the other Drama Films. In this Film the director used very good actors. The boy who plays as Andy "Oscar vandy" did a perfect job as Andy. Its like this film was documentary than a Drama, like as if he really lived this.

    1. I understand what your saying, but he didnt get on the roof to save hes friend he got on the roof too get the girl he likes the ball, I really like your Comment and also your rating, but you should put for details of what your trying to say. You needa write about the editing like what you dont like, because if you didnt rate it it a 5 its because there is things you dont like that you dont find the short film perfect.. Good Job.

  7. When I first saw this film, i didn't understand it at all. Basically my whole class was confused until the second time we watched it in class. Now that I've watched this film on my own, I really understand it. I was able to answer my graphic organizer and complete the guided writing. Although I enjoyed this film and understood it, I think there could've been a better ending to this short film. The ending was the only part of the film that I was still confused about after watching it 3 times. I rate this film 3 stars out of 5.

  8. In my opinion I think this was a good film, it wasn't the best but it was good. I would rate this movie a 5 out of 5. I think Andy really changed throughout this film in the beginning he was a young boy who got bullied a lot but later on he started to stand up for himself. I think the character who was acting as Andy in this film was an amazing actor i think a young child like that who can act that good is great.

  9. Andys character changed because in the beginning he was fine with the girl on the roof . As soon as the boys started bullying him he started changing and acting different . He got in trouble and had to leave the school . I think that this film should make people not bully others . I think that the bullies in this film did a good job at acting like a bully . I also think that Andy did a good job at playing his role because he made it look realistic . I enjoyed the sound effects of the film to . For example , when Andy hit one of the bullies in the face with his bag it sounded really good . I rated this film a 3 out of 5 because i didnt really get the point of the film but i still think that it should teach others about bullying .

  10. I think that his character does change throughout the film because before he didn't stand up for him self but towards the end of the film he turns into this super hero that stands up for him self and fought back and no he got help from friends and teachers to help him fight for him self. The little boy was a great actor for the part he made me feel like the film was happing right in front of me i loved the film it was just the dialog that messed with the film if more dialog was in the film it would of been a 5 but its a 4/5 stars!!!
    love~ TASHA MOORE <3

  11. In the movie "six dollar fifty man" in my opinion the main character Andy does not really change a lot he remains the same. he starts off with a dark presents and ends with a dark presents . I think Andy is a dynamic character because he always stands strong for him self ....

  12. I think that this film is very inspiring to me I don't really know if that's how any one else feels about that. Also I liked the idea on how they centered the idea of the main character Andy being not very bliss because his character is really the main character which plays a pretty big role in story because he's the one who is getting bullied for thinking he's a boy with supernatural powers. I always liked the the track (music) they played but it got a little boring for me. I also loved the setting they used for the film. I would rate this film a 5 out of 5.

  14. This film has great visuals it has a very gloomy feeling which it a dark but realist feeling and what made it better was the amazing soundtrack which just made it feel right. I was disappointed in the theme. I didn't understand what they were trying to teach us. overall I give this film 3 out of 5.

  15. This film to me was not so good as I expected, the setting was good & so were the characters but the acting they was doing was wack ._. . This film does not make sense but the fact that the kid is getting bullied but 2 kids & at the end he defends himself. This is a sad movie, i dont like sad movies because its so dramatic, but i give this film a 5 out of 10.

  16. this film was very confusing i really did not understand this at all it was very intertaining but yet confusing..

  17. I agree with you on saying the film does not make sense but i disagree completely on the acting mad me want to cry they did a beautiful job but overall I agree in everything you were saying great review.

  18. I think this film was fantastic! My rating for the film was 5/5. The film was about a child named Andy who believed he was a superhero. He used his superhero ego to fight off bullies. The bullies bother him for a while and call his doll "Six Dollar Fifty Man" hence the title. I'm glad they used children to play the role as actors because it can reflect on what happens in the real world with children. The character Andy was very daring and silent at times. It gives a mysterious feel in the film. The cinematic in this film was great! The colors went really went and the lighting was pitch perfect. The plot was well planned out and I don't feel liked this missed anything. The soundtrack reflected on what was going on in the film and it did a great job at this!

  19. i think this is a good film. they could of made it more interesting. i feel bad for the kid that everyone keep messing with him. I think hes a weird kid too.

  20. i agree on how confusing the film was and what they were trying to teach me and on how entertaining it was i wish i could have heard more of what you had to say. good review

  21. I think that Andy's particular character is normally agressive not the '' i want to fight'' agressive the angry kind, and so yeah umm hes kind of agressive threw out the whole film from what I have noticed.

  22. I disagree on how it was a 5 out 5 with missing a theme, but i do agree when you say the film had great soundtrack but overall it was an intelligent film review

  23. I believe that Andy's character remained the same throughout the whole film. Throughout the film, he remained the same static character that he was was from the beginning. Even though he had some bullies throughout the film, he had to beat his demons like a regular super hero. I really like this film and and i really enjoyed how the main protagonist is that weird kid in the class the you usually wont talk to.

  24. I believe this film made no sense. The plot didn't get straight t a point,if there was a point. The acting was pretty okay to me , they were into there character like if that was there REAL life.I really LOVED the soundtrack, the music really was set for the setting of the film.Overall I think the film was so-so,I give it a 2 1/2 stars out of 5 stars.

  25. I really enjoyed this film. This film is about a boy named Andy who thinks he has super powers. He does crazy things like jumping off the roof of buildings. He gets bullied by two boys who are bigger than him and he only has one friend. Those boys pick on him because he is different than everyone else. I also really liked the soundtrack. When they played the music, it went really well with what was happening in the scene. On the other hand this film was also a little confusing. I didn't start to understand the film until later. Overall I give this film 5 stars out of 5. This film is worth watching.

  27. This was a short film, i did not get it at first, i did not get how at first he touched that line with water and the water did not move but it looked like it hurted him, i did n t like how they liked each other but they never went out.. BUT i liked how they were bullying him and he never gaved up but he had Hes sad moments were he felt alone , i liked the editing. But the colors werent that good, i feel like the classroom was to dark & when he went to the principal office it was too dark too. But this feel is good because it shows people who bullying other that they needa stop.. Because it Hurts people a lot. & That at the end of the day they still gonna be happy , & He won on drawing something in class, Andy had the best one. I give this short film a 4 out of 5, it can be better but it was good.

  32. Andy's character changes in the film, he was soft then he turned angry alot & started beasting .__. I didn't understand the film at all at first, then I watched it a second time & understood alittle . It kind of didnt make that much sense. He was getting bullied by two boys & I dont even know why. At first it started with the girl giving him that letter, and then he just got angry o_o . Then I realized he was artistic. I give this film a 5 out of 10 <3 .

  33. This was a okay film. I think Andy's character does not change throughout the film because he is still acting like he did in the beginning of the film.He still think he got some type of super power. Andy is a static character to me because he stays the same throughout the film. Andy to me is the good character in the film.

  34. I think this film was pretty much a waste of my time. Although I liked some things that they did for example; the sound and how the actors/actresses were playing thier role well, but overall I did not get the main message I give this film two thumbs down.

  35. This film was pretty entertaining. It was very funny. How do you smack someone with your book bag though? It lacks in explaining what the films about. I didn't understand why this kid was always getting bullied. If there wasn't a description, I wouldn't know what was going on. Overall, This was a good short film.

  36. the film is a good film is really amazing that they put a small kid into bullying, superheros, travel and love the kid was also strong he did'nt care what happpen to him he just defend the girl i also like the graphics and the background of the movie i will give this movie a 8 out of 10 because i like the sounds and the characters

    ReplyDelete
  37. this film was a good film but just they way they expressed it and how the way the character's looked as they did. i felt that he did react to the bullying in a good way cause they didn't ever feel the way he felt so he reacted good in my perspective.he got in trouble for climbing to the top of a building /house and he went to the principal office for that and even after that he was chased by the bully and tripped thats when he reacted the way he did and didin't get in trouble for defending himself.but besides that i give this film a 5 cause of the fade in and out of the description. I would recommend this short film to be viewed in a elementary school
