Filmed at the Warner Bros. lot, Kirk Sullivan’s ambitious, action-packed short The Come Up makes the most of its epic location with a sprawling chase sequence and an impressive series of stunts that would fit right in with the feature films and television shows produced at the studio.
With a plot conceived whilst working on the crew of his first major studio film, Kirkland and longtime writing partner Chris Boyd concocted an action-packed narrative with heavy doses of insider humour. Taking us on a whirlwind tour of a world of dollies, green screens, and pyrotechnics, The Come Up manages to provide an insightful and humorous look at life on the film set, whilst simultaneously thrilling us with the twists and turns of the pursuit.
While the production is snappy, it is the heart and the tone of the film that excels for us. A relatively straight-forward heist flick (albeit rife with the twists that define the genre) the script builds its character’s personalities well, and cleverly tosses off a few one-liners (“couldn’t do that if we were shooting digital!”). We also enjoyed the piece’s pleasing meta-nature—the film imagines an unknown PA executing an elaborate creative production to win himself Hollywood fame in much the same way that short filmmakers themselves attempt to do with their work.
So, for its smart script and awesome production values we heartily recommend The Come Up. We hope Hollywood success follows for Kirk Sullivan and his team much like it does for his character.

I agree with many of the points found the film review above, provided by the folks of Shortoftheweek.com, particularly with the film's heart and tone. The Come Up is a fast paced, oftentimes action packed comedy that pokes fun at serious intensity that exists on professional film sets. The PA, who is at the bottom of the pyramid, will do anything it takes to make himself relevant. This film made me feel optimistic and excited about going through great lengths in order to achieve my dreams. What do you think?

Deletei agree with Mr.Lopez cause it was exciting and it look real and i enjoyed it. my favorite part was when the guy got staved by a metal stick and it looked so real but it was wasnt at the end when he went in the ambulance thats when i saw it was fake and when the girl gave him money but he didn't take it and when he left the girl found the paper that he wrote and she saw 100$ on it and when she looked at the back she saw that it was fake and she got mad because she did not take the real money the guy have the real money and thats when he got famous and made his movie and got what he wanted that was his dream.
DeleteI would agree with Mr. Lopez because, despite the lack of the comedy, this film was awesome in every way the average human can think of! This movie is like a reboot of "The Karate Kid, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and Rush Hour" with the fighting sequences. If this were a theatrical film, a video game should be developed, based on the movie. When I first saw this film, I thought that it would be also funny. However, it lacks the qualities of an actual comedic movie.

I like how the main character of this film is so intelligent on how good he is planning everything. I would recommend this film to every one i know, this is hands down the best short film I've seen in film class.

The film's plot was extraordinary and the glimpses of reality in this short film add to the message that a PA can rise from the bottom of the film industry. I would recommend this to anyone who would be willing to listen. The rating that I give this film is a 10 out of 10.

The director of this film most have worked very hard because the features , the motion ,and the scenes were very impressive. This film was about an intern who tries to impress his boss so he can make his dreams come true. If i had to rate this film it would be a 5 out of 5 stars great job .

DeleteWell, for me, I think film was FLAWLESS, and OUTSTANDING!!! This is the best film i've ever seen since "Inside"! My favorite part was when PA was fighting the masked thief, and when he was pierced by her. I also liked the ending, when the thief was actually his friend, until he tricked her by giving her counterfeit money. If I was to rate this film, I would give it a 9.5 out of 10!!! EPIC!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Adonis because I also really liked this film and its features. An example of good features in this film would be that we got to see the set in the movie and also I liked the effects of the spear through the body. That was crazy.
DeleteI agree with you Adonis because I feel that the film supports the reality of the life of a PA while adding a tinge of humor and an action-packed pursuit to the mix. I also feel that the plot was written to perfection. The actors' performances were very realistic. The soundtrack emphasized the suspence in the pursuit. I highly recommend this film, my rating being a 10 out of 10.

DeleteYes, Xavier made me realized that this is a very unique & awesome film. At first, I just thought that the chase scene was part of the script, but as it turns out, it wasn't! This is the type of short film that I love, fast-paced, action and explosions! So i'd definitely will give this film a 5/5 too, just as Xavier did.
DeleteI also feel that way because I agree with Mr.Lopez that the PA would do anything to get his movie made. This film was very good it had its good and its bad the film did a good job with the setting and how the PA used the resources to get the two things he wanted his movie and the money. On the other hand the movie did slip on some things like when the PA was chasing the thief the director yelled "stop him he was my money" but the PA said while on the roof "stop her". Also the director had a ride so why cant he just speed up and catch the thief. I would give this film a 4 out of 5 because it was very good and hardly predictable.

I was amazed in many parts since there were parts where you would not expect at all. The camera angles for this were shot perfectly and so in conclusion, I give this film a 5/5

ReplyDeleteTo be honest I think this film was ok. I think the ending could have been a little better. The beginning and middle was exciting though until the ending ruined it. Overall I give this film 2/5 stars because even though some parts were exciting it was kind of boring and unexciting.

I think the film was very energetic in a good way because it makes seem like this PA is like a superhero going after the bad guy, but he really isn't so this film is an action film which makes t funner to watch and it was so much better than "Sixty dollar Fifty Man". ReplyDeletei agree with mr lopez mainly because the film was very impressive , and the stunts were outstanding . one of the main good qualities about this film is that it starts off with a irrelevant young man that wants his script to be filmed and no one reallly wants a PAs script , when the tables turn is when the money gets stolen and he fights to get the money for his boss but at the end it was all planned and he gave all the money to his partner but the thing is he gave her fake money and collected the real money somewhere else after that he became very famous and big .

I really thought the guy had died but then i remember a part when they actually tested out the pole. One thing i didn't understand was how was he chasing the girl in the middle of the day then to the night. i really like this film he got what he wanted , and he found a way to be famous of his script. i would rate this a 5 out of 5 because the film was very great and the scenes were crazy.

It looks like they playing a game of Temple Run because they running for hours. & when they started fighting at the end was real exciting, because to find out that they were working together was shocking. But it was funny how he scammed her & took all the movie for him self lmfao, he did her grimmy, but i rate this film a 8 out of 10

ReplyDeleteI liked this short film but i disliked it at the same time. I thought this short film was very predictable like I knew what was coming. I liked the Chase Scene it was cool but i didnt like how they added slow motion effect to the scene i found it corny & distasteful. But I liked how overall is the short is about getting his movie produced, So he schemed his way to the top. Faking his death, Stealing Production Money. Partnering up with a female worker (forgot her name). Overall i'll rate this movie 7.5 out of 10
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mr.Lopez, I liked the film, The Come Up. It was great! the action, scenes, the acting was amazing. The part that really stood out to me was when all of a sudden, the whole story changed. The actors of the film played a really good role on what to do. The emotion was really believe-able. This film is more like an action, mysterious kind of film. I like those types of films. If I was to be the director of the film, I would change the part of how everything changed in the set. Example, I would put some kind of sound to let the audience know that it's going to be a different story so nobody would be confused. I rate this film a 4.5 out of 5. Also, I would recommend this film because it is really interesting and a lot of people *from what I know* enjoy watching action films. :)

ReplyDeleteyo estoy de acuerdo con Mr. Lopez por que me paresio que el joven queria que el director de la pelicula que de seguro era muy prestigiado viera su libreto y hizo todo eso para que el director dirigiera su pelicula porque de seguro ese era el sueno del joven ! No me gusto la pelicula porque el joven podia intentar otra forma de volverse famoso y ganar dinero por ejemplo trabajando y ganandose los meritos , pero de la forma que el lo hizo no me gusto en absoluto !

However, I disagree because even if the PA was trying achieve his dream, he was doing it the wrong way making a hole show about it. He wasnt really trying to achieve his dream. He only wanted to become rich.
